About UEMS

The Union Européenne des Médecins Specialistes (UEMS) is an international non profit-making association founded in 1958 that represents all medical specialists in Europe. The UEMS works for the promotion and harmonisation of the highest levels of training of medical specialists in countries that are members of the European Union. In 1962, the UEMS created Specialist sections for each of the main disciplines practised in its member states. The Specialist sections are composed of two delegates from each national member association nominated by the national representative specialist association. Within the Specialist Sections there is also a European Board which is composed of two delegates per country. Today there are 39 specialist sections and 7 multidisciplinary joint committees (see list below). The UEMS also deals with issues concerning continuing medical education (CME), continuing professional development (CPD) and the free movement of specialist doctors within the EU. In 1999, UEMS also established the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (EACCME) with the purpose to harmonize and improve the quality of specialist medical care in Europe.

PWG representatives to UEMS

Since 1991 and in accordance with the statutes of the UEMS European Boards, each UEMS Specialist section and European board welcomes a representative from PWG to represent doctors in training. The PWG representatives in the European Boards have the right to a full vote according to a decision of the UEMS Council of Management of 18 October 1991. The PWG representatives to the UEMS Specialist section and European Boards are elected by the PWG plenary and must be doctors in training in the corresponding speciality. In 2007, PWG was also invited to send representatives to UEMS Multidisciplinary Joint Committees (MJCs). It is of great importance for all European junior doctors to have a PWG representative in the respective UEMS Speciality section, European Board or MJC in order to inform about PWG-policy, and to defend junior doctors point of view and interest. This collaboration is also necessary for PWG and the UEMS to achieve our common goal to improve the quality of post graduate training in Europe.
